Remove Audio from Video, Free & Private

Strip background noise, an unwanted voiceover, or copyrighted music from a clip before adding your own soundtrack. VimCut removes the audio track without re-encoding the picture quality.

How to mute a video online

  1. 01Click "Choose a video" and select your file.
  2. 02Click "Remove Audio", no other settings needed.
  3. 03Wait a few seconds while VimCut strips the audio track.
  4. 04Download your silent video file.

How this video muter works

Muting a video means removing its audio track so the file plays in silence. VimCut copies the video stream into a new file and leaves the audio stream out, so there are no settings to choose. Your original file is not changed.

Because the picture is copied rather than re-encoded, the video quality is identical to the original and the process is quick, even for long clips. It runs on WebAssembly (ffmpeg.wasm) in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. The output is an MP4 file. Muting is useful when a clip has background noise, an unwanted voiceover or music you cannot use. You choose the file, click Remove Audio and download the silent copy. Because nothing is encoded again, the result is ready quickly, and your original file with its sound is still on your device if you change your mind.

Tips and related tools

Muting is a good first step before adding your own sound: after you remove the original audio, use Add Audio to Video to lay a new track over the clip. To keep the sound as a separate file before you remove it, use Extract Audio. Large files are slower, so VimCut warns from about 500 MB and blocks files above 2 GB.

Why edit video in your browser?

  • Your file never leaves your device. No uploads, no privacy risk.
  • No account, no watermark, and no daily usage limit.
  • Works on desktop and mobile browsers. Nothing to install.
  • Completely free, powered by open-source WebAssembly video tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing audio affect video quality?
