Video Compressor: Compress Video Online, Free & Private

Use this free video compressor to compress video online and reduce video size for email, WhatsApp, Discord or any form with a strict limit. It runs in your browser, so your file is never uploaded.

How to compress a video online

  1. 01Click "Choose a video" and select the file you want to shrink.
  2. 02Pick a compression level: Smaller file, Balanced, or Best quality.
  3. 03Click "Compress Video" and let your browser do the encoding.
  4. 04Compare the new file size and download the compressed video.

How this video compressor works

A video is large mostly because of its bitrate, the amount of data used for every second of picture. Compression re-encodes the video with a lower bitrate, and sometimes a smaller frame size, so the file shrinks while it still looks fine on a phone or a laptop screen.

VimCut does this inside your browser. When your browser supports it, the work uses the built-in video encoder, which is fast. Otherwise it falls back to WebAssembly, which is slower but gives the same kind of result. The output is an MP4 that plays on almost every device.

Compress video to fit a size limit

Most people compress video because something refuses to accept it. The presets aim for a target size so you do not have to guess. Compress for WhatsApp aims under 16 MB, the size WhatsApp sends as a video message. Compress for Discord aims under 10 MB, which fits the free upload limit. Discord has changed that limit more than once, so check the current figure for your account if the file matters.

For email, many providers, including Gmail, accept attachments up to about 25 MB. Use the Smaller file level and check the result before you send it.

Compress video on iPhone and Android

The compressor works in the mobile browser, so you can compress video on iPhone or Android without installing an app. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, choose a video from your library and wait for the result. Clips recorded on an iPhone are often MOV files, and the output is converted to MP4 at the same time.

Phones have less memory than computers, so keep very long 4K clips for a computer, or trim them first with Trim Video.

Reduce video size without ruining quality

Start with Balanced and look at the result before you try Smaller file. A shorter clip is the cheapest saving of all, so cut what you do not need first. If the file is still too large, a lower resolution helps more than a lower bitrate for screens that are small anyway.

Which file sizes can it handle?

Because nothing is uploaded, your device does all the work. Files of a few hundred megabytes run well on most computers. VimCut shows a warning from about 500 MB, or lower on a phone with little memory, and it blocks files above 2 GB, because they can crash a browser tab.

Why edit video in your browser?

  • Your file never leaves your device. No uploads, no privacy risk.
  • No account, no watermark, and no daily usage limit.
  • Works on desktop and mobile browsers. Nothing to install.
  • Completely free, powered by open-source WebAssembly video tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much smaller will my video get?

Typical compression reduces file size by 50 to 80 percent depending on the source bitrate and the level you choose, with a small, often unnoticeable drop in visual quality.

Will compressing reduce the resolution?

Smaller file scales the long side to about 854 pixels. Balanced scales it to about 1280 pixels. Best quality keeps the original size and only lowers the bitrate. If a level would make the file larger, VimCut gives back the original unchanged.

How do I compress a video to 10 MB?

Use Compress for Discord, which aims under 10 MB. For longer videos the picture is scaled down so the file still fits.

Can I compress a video on my iPhone?

Yes. Open the compressor in Safari or Chrome on the phone, choose the video and download the MP4. Nothing is uploaded and no app is needed.

Is it safe to compress private or sensitive videos?

Yes. Compression happens entirely in your browser, so your video is never uploaded to a server or seen by anyone else.

Is the video compressor free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
